Ridin' Metro

Recently, KYCC began participating in a new program with Metro Transit Los Angeles (MTLA) to provide transit passes for employees. Employees who want to participate get an annual pass at a very discounted rate. The pass, or TAP card, features new technology being tested by MTLA and works by tapping on a console when you get on the bus, subway or commuter train.
Reaction to the TAP card has been overwhelmingly positive.  Susan Woo in the clinical unit says, "I'm really grateful for my pass. It's really cool tapping it on that console. I definitely enjoy my commute because I don't have to sit in traffic or deal with crazy drivers. And I have no problems with parking."
Jesus Guillen in the environmental services unit reports that his commute is actually 10 minutes shorter by Metro than by car. He is saving time, gas and money. And he's getting more exercise because he rides his bicycle from the subway station to the office.
Ryan Tong in the youth services unit says, "I love my bus pass. Previously, I was paying $65 a month for the pass. This year, the fare was going to go up to $75. I commute from Garden Grove, so it takes roughly one hour and 30 minutes to get to work. Thanks again for the passes." He now pays $15.67.
KYCC is happy to be able to bring this convenience to the staff while supporting a more sustainable working and living environment here in Los Angeles.

The Power
Of Storytelling

Children of all ages are drawn to stories of heroism, adventure and justice. Recently, KYCC teachers have been introducing old folk stories and fairy tales from different cultures into the classroom. The children make use of flannel pieces and boards to retell the stories. Some children take turns narrating a favorite tale out loud to each other, imitating the teachers' technique of call and response. Others take a story they've heard and draw pictures of the characters. Writing, drawing, acting, role-playing, singing and collaborating all arise from one well-told tale, and it is a pleasure to watch it all unfold before us.

Golf Tournament

In partnership with Jamison Services, Inc., KYCC will be holding its first golf tournament on April 25 at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine. The day's activities will include lunch, dinner and an auction.
