KYCC is helping to organize one of the largest Earth Day festivals ever to happen in
Koreatown. On April 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wilshire Boulevard between Western and
Harvard will be closed to vehicle traffic in celebration of Earth Day. There will be 100
exhibit booths, live entertainment, a children's stage and other fun and environmentally-
friendly activities for both youth and adults.
Titled "Car Free Day," the Earth Day festival aims to help people adopt more eco-friendly
lifestyles. Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation, bicycle, or walk to the
event. April 22 also marks the beginning of the Wilshire Center's Cool District Program, in
which the Wilshire Center will reduce global warming emissions by two percent each year
for each of the next 40 years.
At the event, KYCC will be giving away 300 free shade trees, one to each property owner,
as part of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's Million Trees LA Program (MTLA). In 2007,
KYCC distributed more than 4,000 trees as part of the MTLA program and has planted
more than 2,000 street trees over the last 14 months. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps
(LACC) will be in a booth next to KYCC offering even more free trees delivered to directly
qualifying properties shortly after the Earth Day event. Other highlights include a live
acoustic concert by Michael Franti, a bike raffle and other giveaways. So come out, learn,
participate, adopt a free tree and enjoy Earth Day!
