On Sept. 20-23, the KAC national convention will be hosted in the South for the first time. The theme will be “Sharing the Dream … Making it a Reality,” drawing from Martin Luther King Jr.’s famed “I Have a Dream” speech as well as the desire of Korean Americans to achieve the “American Dream.”

As the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement, and with its burgeoning Korean American population, Atlanta is the ideal setting for a convention that will be covering the topics of human rights, civil rights/race relations and service to the community.

The main topics to be discussed in this year’s convention will be race relations and community/political empowerment as well as panel discussions regarding the Korean peninsula, particularly North Korean issues. There will be workshops on subjects ranging from domestic violence in the community to entrepreneurship. We know there will be plenty of topics of interest for every attendee. There will also be opportunities to network with people from all over the nation.

The roster of speakers include Doug Shipman, head of Atlanta’s new civil rights museum; Adrian Hong, executive director of Liberty in North Korea (LiNK); Mayor Jun Choi of Edison, N.J.; and Becky Lee of “Survivor,” who will cover the topic of domestic violence.

There will be a lighter side to the convention, as well as plenty of warm southern hospitality. Some of the fun events will include a Friday night southern barbeque and comedy show featuring West Coast Korean comedian PK and a goodbye southern brunch.
