Volunteer Isabel Chung, KABA Executive Vice President Paul Park and legal aid attorney Grace Lee (left to right) discuss issues arising from an individual’s government benefits issue.

On the second Tuesday of each month, you can find about a dozen KABA attorneys and law students staffing KABA’s monthly pro bono clinics. Monolingual Korean immigrants and Korean Americans who come to the free clinic seeking legal advice are able to meet one-on-one with volunteer attorneys on a first-come, first-serve basis. In operation since 2002, the clinics have become an important cornerstone of KABA’s mission and work in the community.

Each year, KABA recognizes an attorney who has shown a particular commitment to the pro bono clinics. This year’s recipient is Susan S. Park, an associate at Freid and Goldsman, a Century City law firm specializing in the area of family law. In 2006 and 2007, she was recognized as a Southern California Rising Star, an honor bestowed upon her by other colleagues and judges in family law practice. Immediately before entering law school, Susan worked with Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children, and interned at the Alliance for Children’s Rights during law school.

Despite a demanding work schedule, Susan finds great satisfaction volunteering her time at KABA’s monthly pro bono clinics. Helping those who are limited in English proficiency and financial resources access the judicial system through KABA’s legal clinic has been a great source of affirmation for her career. KABA recognized Susan at its annual installation dinner on May 4 at Union Station in Los Angeles.

KABA thanks Susan and all the volunteers for their hard work and dedication. KABA is seeking more volunteer attorneys, especially in the areas of business and immigration law, as well as other volunteers who can help with interpretation and intake.
