A third-place ranking in the overall medal count for a country at an international sporting competition doesn’t seem like anything to get upset about when 26 nations are participating.
However when your nation is one of only four recognized as winter sports powerhouses and the setting is the 2007 Asian Winter Games, then third place is pretty humbling.
Such was the case for Korea in Changchun, China, at the annual games held Jan. 28 to Feb. 4. Still, Korea earned a more than respectable 33 medals, finishing behind China (61 medals) and Japan (36). Kazakhstan took the No. 4 spot with 18 medals while only two other nations medaled at the games: Uzbekistan and Mongolia with just one bronze medal each.
To break down Korea’s medal haul more specifically, its delegation of athletes still accounted for a respectable nine gold medals, 13 silver and 11 bronze. And not surprisingly, its biggest haul came from speed skating, where 19 medals were claimed, including seven gold.
Korea netted its other two gold medals in the precision sport of curling, taking down archrival Japan, while its alpine skiers performed well enough to claim three silver medals and three bronze.
Meanwhile, the men’s hockey team decimated Hong Kong (11-0) and Malaysia (14-1) but was ousted by Japan in the final round (0-3), earning bronze with a win over China (3-1).
