KCCD is pleased to announce our 2007 Parent Educational Seminars on Asian Youth.  In partnership with Asian Pacific Probation Association, Asian Gang Unit, LA County District Attorney’s Office and Wilshire United Methodist Church, KCCD is providing free seminars to educate parents and community leaders in interacting more effectively with their youth.

Although national trends show that juvenile arrests have decreased in the last 20 years, when examined by ethnicity, Asian youth are the only group to show an increase in arrests.  In addition, a recent report shows that the fastest-growing gang population in Los Angeles is Asians.  According to a newly released Advancement Project report on gang intervention, adequate resources for our Asian youth are limited in scope and availability in the city of Los Angeles.

In response to this growing crisis, KCCD hopes that these parent educational seminars will empower parents, families, pastors, youth workers and community members to become effective advocates for youth.

KCCD President and CEO Hyepin Im said, “Contrary to the model minority myth, Asian youth face significant challenges in communicating with their parents, having pressure from Asian gangs and dealing with substance abuse. It is imperative that we educate and equip our community with skills to lead our children away from violence and the trend toward at-risk behaviors.”

The first seminar, “Understanding Your Teen: What Teenagers Face in the World Today” was hosted on February 20, featuring speaker Hans Liang, President of Asian Pacific Probation Association.  Upcoming seminars will address specific topics, which will help parents be aware of Asian gangs and how to prevent their youth from becoming a gang member.

These upcoming seminars will be hosted at Wilshire United Methodist Church, 4350 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, from 7 to 8 p.m.

• March 20 — “Motivational Communication with Your Youth”

• April 17 — “What Parents Need to Know about Youth Substance Abuse”

• May 1 — “Keeping Youth Safe on the Internet”
