Students at last year’s NCLC in Fawnskin, Calif.

KAC-LA is excited to announce the 27th annual National College Leadership Conference, where we will continue the tradition of bringing college students from across the nation, and in the recent years, from around the globe, to discuss emerging issues concerning young Korean Americans.

This year, we have adjusted our schedule to accommodate the lives of college students who are busier than ever. The NCLC will begin in the early morning hours on June 21 and end in the evening on June 23.

The NCLC curriculum will be divided into three categories:

• Emerging Issues Discussions: We will discuss topics such as the LA Riots of 4.29, 1992 (Sa-i-gu); normalization of North Korea relations by the United States; the impact of U.S.- R.O.K Free Trade Agreement; and the new immigration bill and other pending legislation.

• Leadership Development/Career Advice/Financial Acumen: Through an emphasis on fostering leadership skills, public speaking tips and interview skills, along with a better understanding of finances, we will work to make you smarter and savvier young adults who can step into the post-college world with confidence.

• Networking Skills Enhancement & Opportunities to Network: The importance of networking will be shared along with tips on how to effectively network. Additionally, we will have a dozen or so professionals (lawyers, architects, wealth management/finance gurus, teachers, doctors and more) come join us during the NCLC to interact and share with the NCLC participants.

We know that this year’s NCLC will be a wonderful and memorable and possibly life altering event. PK of Kollaboration fame and the Laugh Factory will be one of many speakers that you will not want to miss. Download an application and apply before the limited slots are all filled.

New Immigration Reform Bill Negatively Impacts Kas

The new immigration reform bill that  was announced in mid-May has caused quite a stir in the Korean American community. This is because a workable comprehensive immigration bill was not issued. Instead, a piecemeal approach to appease different stakeholders without concern for the Asian Pacific American communities was proposed. This bill negates the very important “Family Reunification” visa category of immigration.

“Family Reunification” will soon be eradicated with the number of visa slots shrinking from 90,000 to 40,000. The wait time for visas is already long, sometimes families must wait more than 10 years and certain countries’ wait lists are closer to 20 years for families to be united.

Considering that nearly 70 percent of every Korean American residing in the United States immigrated through the “Family Reunification” visa status, this would severely impact our community.
