In May, at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City, “Heroes” actor and panel judge James Kyson Lee asked Miss Korea the final question: “If you had any type of superpower, what would it be and why?”
Through an English translator, 24-year-old Honey Lee stated that she would like a superpower that would help her missionary work. The translator then told the audience that Lee also wanted “a wallet that never dries up,” which seemed awkward for a beauty pageant.
Those who understand Korean believe what Lee really said was that she wished her wallet would never dry up so she would always be able to help others. Instead, what was relayed in English made her seem a little selfish.
Lee, a professional kayageum (stringed instrument) player, volunteers for UNICEF and World Vision. One of her goals is to become a missionary in developing or undeveloped countries including North Korea.?
Lee was named third runner-up in the mega pageant, but the crown went to Riyo Mori, Miss Japan.
The lesson from this translation blunder: Always stick with “world peace.”
