I am confused about the December 2006 issue’s Spotlight article, “Media Watchdogs,” and its coverage of domestic sex trafficking. First, I am confused as to why the article’s principal focus is the need for activism in response to misrepresentation. Wait a second, isn’t the problem sex trafficking? Second, I am confused as to why the article is not part of a larger spotlight on Korean sex trafficking in America. I find it hard to believe that it is difficult to find space amid a sea of alcohol, digital escapism and poisonous gases from both man and machine. Lastly, I am confused as to why after being indirectly educated of the misrepresented issue that the conclusion of the article is an activist’s holier-than-thou exhortation. I want to learn, but I am just left … confused.

Editor’s Note — Koreans involved in sex trafficking is a subject we have been wanting to address in this magazine for some years now. Unfortunately, our attempts to cover the topic with well-researched and balanced reporting, rather than sensationalizing the issue, thus far have fallen short.
