Chan Ho Park teaches a KYCC student how to pitch like a pro!

KYCC would like to announce the grand opening of its new after-school center, The Tree House, which officially opened Jan. 22. Come visit our new site located on the second floor of our office at 680 S. Wilton Place. The center’s regular hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. All high school youth are encouraged to join by filling out an application.

The purpose of The Tree House is to create a space for youth to escape the chaotic world of Los Angeles and to freely develop themselves in a safe environment. We offer this center as a safe haven for youth to feel secure and confident about their identity and actively pursue their dreams in the city.

The Tree House promotes art, music, life skills, college prep, homework assistance, job training, community activism and whatever else our youth need in their community. This center is a place to relax, meet new people, and explore various venues toward self-improvement. We encourage our youth to empower themselves and create the changes they want to see in the world. The center only tolerates safe and legal forms of expression.

KYCC’s environmental team helps give away free trees.

In February, we will be seeking youth to develop our new Anime Club, participate in photography art classes, join our Youth Council, and sign up for music workshops. These are just a few activities planned for next month, not to mention our weekly Friday night movies and various other activities available at our center every day. There are no limits to what we are willing to explore. We challenge the youth to test our imagination and creativity.

For more information, please contact Shukry Cattan at (213) 365-7400, ext. 119, or e-mail scattan@kyccla.org.

Chan Ho Park Leads Baseball Clinic

Recently, 20 children from KYCC and Seoul International Park were honored with a day of expert baseball instruction by none other than former Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Chan Ho Park. Mr. Park generously purchased gloves and hats for all participants in the baseball clinic and signed baseballs for each child to take home. The afternoon was comprised of warm-up drills, pitching and batting instruction. The afternoon concluded with a pizza party and drinks giving the youth the opportunity to goof around with the professional baseball player, currently with the San Diego Padres. The afternoon was considered a home run by everyone involved!

Anybody Need A Tree?

KYCC, along with four other community groups, is assisting Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with his Million Trees LA project, in which he plans to donate trees to the city of Los Angeles.

For the kickoff event, KYCC and Councilmember Herb Wesson’s office teamed up and gave away 200 free trees from the Council District 10 field office on Western Avenue. Similar events will be held throughout Koreatown and Los Angeles this year.
