On Oct. 10, KCCD president Hyepin Im participated in a press conference hosted by Sen. Diane Feinstein and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with Jeff Carr, City of Los Angeles Gang Reduction and Youth Development director. The press conference announced Sen. Feinstein’s introduction and passing of a Senate Bill that would authorize more than $800 million in funding for prevention and intervention for youth and gang violence. The legislation has yet to pass in the House of Representatives. Hyepin Im spoke on the growing delinquency of Asian youth and the need for equal attention and an investment of resources for this community.
On Nov. 6, Hyepin Im, Jin Kim and Josh An of KCCD participated in a press conference hosted by Neighborhood Housing Services, which was attended by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, NHS President Lori Gay and a number of other dignitaries involved in the foreclosure crisis. Jackson spoke on the importance of investing resources to address the foreclosure crisis and help affected families. Hyepin Im presented and emphasized the reality that the foreclosure crisis is impacting all communities including Asian American communities. As a result of language barriers, monolingual immigrant communities such as the Korean community are especially impacted by the crisis. In Los Angeles alone, there have been more than 120 Korean American families impacted by foreclosure in the last month.
