Strengthening Relationships

Parent educational seminar series

KCCD is pleased to offer our 2007 parent educational seminars on Asian Youth as a free resource to parents in the community.  In partnership with Asian Pacific Probation Association, Asian Gang Unit, LA County District Attorney’s Office, Wilshire United Methodist Church, the seminars help educate parents and community leaders on interacting more effectively with their youth.

The first seminar, “Understanding Your Teen: What Teenagers Face in the World Today,” brought together parents and featured speaker Hans Liang, president of Asian Pacific Probation Association, to learn ways of improving understanding of adolescents and teens. Covered topics included physical, emotional and sexual development. Upcoming seminars will help parents understand what teenagers face in their social contexts, raising awareness of Asian gangs and peer pressure.

To sign up for seminars and for additional information, please contact Joanna Han at (213) 984-4243 or jhan@kccd3300.org, or visit our website at www.kccd3300.org.

Marriage Week 2007

KCCD celebrates by launching its 1,000 Signs Campaign

On Feb. 13, KCCD hosted a press conference announcing its 1,000 signs campaign to celebrate National Marriage Week 2007 during the week of February 11-17.

KCCD President Hyepin Im said, “We are pleased to participate in this 1,000 signs campaign and Marriage Week 2007 with other coalitions in cities all across the state of California to celebrate and promote healthy marriages. Current research shows that 90 percent of Americans will marry someday, and 93 percent of all Americans hope to enter into a ‘lasting and happy union with one person.’ Like driver’s education is necessary for learning to successfully operate a vehicle, marriage and relationship classes that teach skills are also a critical element of building the successful and healthy marriages that most Americans desire. We are happy to raise awareness and provide access to resources for the community.”

KCCD’s Asian Pacific Healthy Marriage Network and partnering organizations posted 1,000 signs promoting healthy marriage throughout Koreatown and the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Each of the signs displays one of ten tips for keeping marriages healthy, successful, and exciting, based on an extensive body of research on behaviors that mark successful relationships.

The signs also contained a link to KCCD’s marriage resource website, www.asianmarriagelink.org, where couples of all stages can find programs and classes on relationship skills.
