NAME: Sunhye Choi

AGE: 30

ALLEGED CRIME: Second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

VICTIM: Nicole Jeong, 8 months old, of Irvine, Calif.

BACKGROUND: Choi was home babysitting Nicole and her own 21-month-old daughter on Thursday, Aug. 4, when she called her husband about 3:30 p.m., asking for help, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Choi’s husband called paramedics within nine minutes of arriving home.

Nicole was not breathing when paramedics took her to Irvine Medical Center at about 4 p.m. She was pronounced dead less than an hour later, police said.

Nicole had a large red bruise on the front of her head and bruising on the back of the head. Her vagina and anus also showed injuries. An autopsy found Nicole had suffered “blunt force trauma to the head” — the result of seven separate blows, authorities said.

Choi had been babysitting Nicole for five weeks. Nicole’s 4-year-old brother was at preschool when the paramedics arrived. The Chois and the Jungs attended the same church and lived in the same Parkview Lane apartment complex.

Choi was arrested at 10:30 that night. She pled not guilty on Aug. 18 in Orange County Superior Court.

BAIL: Being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $1 million.

NEXT COURT DATE: Pre-trial hearing set for Sept. 6 at Orange County Superior Court. If convicted, Choi could be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
