Seven Times Scared
Come to KYCC’s 7th Annual Halloween Haunthouse!

KYCC’s Youth Development unit is preparing its 7th Annual Drug Free Halloween Haunthouse to be held on Monday, Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The haunted house is for elementary school students in grades 1 through 6 only. All attending children will receive an anti-drug education message, as well as free candy at the conclusion of the haunted house. The haunted house will feature multiple rooms with scary themes and will be brimming with scary monsters to pop out and startle children as they traverse through it.

The Halloween Haunthouse will be organized by YDAPP and KCSC. YDAPP (Youth Drug Abuse Prevention Program) is a leadership development group for high school students focusing on educating the community on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. It is now in its ninth year and is preparing for another strong year of advocacy and education for the Koreatown community. The YDAPP class of 2005-2006 is comprised of 11 high school juniors and seniors. KCSC (Korean Coalition of Students in California) is a leadership development group for high school students focusing on organizing community service. KCSC acts as an umbrella organization for Korean clubs on high school campuses throughout the Los Angeles County area.

The 2004 small business expo helped owners learn the ins and outs of their trade.

The Halloween Haunthouse attracts over 300 elementary school students. It will take place in the downstairs parking garage at KYCC’s Wilton site which is located at 680 South Wilton Place, Los Angeles 90005. For additional questions or concerns please contact Youth Development Coordinator Benjie Kim at (213) 365-7400, ext. 118, or via e-mail at

Money On The Mind
Community input needed on MHSA funds

The Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), which became state law in January as a result of the passage of Proposition 63, provides a statewide opportunity to transform California’s mental health system. As part of the local planning process, KYCC, in cooperation with other Los Angeles County mental health service providers, held three community input meetings in August to gather recommendations from consumers, family members, community members, and service providers.

Community input is essential in ensuring that MHSA funds are allocated in ways that will move the current mental health system toward a culturally competent system that promotes recovery through independence, hope, empowerment and resiliency. For more information or to get involved in the planning process, visit the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Web site at
