A Meeting Of The Minds
KAC’s Third Annual National Convention

KAC’s Third Annual National Convention was held Sept. 23-25 at the Denver Hyatt Regency in Colorado. With the theme of “Building Bridges for Tomorrow,” the convention focused on strategies to bridge the divide between Korean Americans and the mainstream community at large, while also looking at the division between ethnic communities, as well as among different generations of Korean Americans.

Panels featured included: “Positioning Generation X and Y in the 21st Century,” “Empowering APA High School and College Students in Community Leadership,” “North Korea Issues & the KA Community,” “Building Bridges for Tomorrow,” and “The Role of the Korean American Church.”

Approximately 200 members of KAC’s 16 chapters, affiliate and affiliates organizations around the nation, as well as invited guests, discussed the future of the Korean American community and the role of KAC in national community-building around these key issues.

Speakers and panelists included Shinae Chun, director of the Women’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor; Maurice Suh, deputy mayor of the City of Los Angeles; Susan Yoo, defense attorney for Michael Jackson; and Jackie Young, former Vice Speaker of State House of Representatives, Hawaii. Dr. Eui Young Yu, K.W. Lee, Ralph Ahn, Julie Sun of Freddie Mac, and Robert Yi from State Farm also spoke.

Citizenship 101

New CD released to help applicants for U.S. citizenship

The KAC Los Angeles Citizenship Center, with support from Radio Korea, has produced new and improved self-study CDs and cassette tapes for citizenship applicants preparing to take the naturalization interview.

The CD covers the 101 sample questions released by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and is intended to familiarize the listener with U.S. history and government subject content for the interview. Each of the 101 questions and answers is read aloud in English, followed by a brief explanation in Korean.
The CD or cassette tape, accompanied by a written text, is perfect for repeated listening. It is a great way to prepare for the interview while driving in your car or at home at your leisure. The CD/booklet package is priced at $25 and the cassette is $20. For mail orders, $5 will be added for shipping and handling.
