Lee Man Soo, a.k.a. the “Hulk,” did some heavy lifting on Oct. 26.
But he had to wait only six years, not the 88 the city of Chicago had to endure, for the White Sox to remove the burden of scandal (the 1919 “Black” Sox threw the World Series for gamblers) and hold aloft once again the World Series Champions trophy. After the White Sox swept the Houston Astros in four games, Lee, the bullpen catcher, joined the other coaches and players in the champagne-soaked glory.
Lee, who earned the nickname “Hulk” while playing 16 seasons in South Korea as the catcher of the Samsung Lions and is considered the “Babe Ruth of Korea,” started coaching in the Cleveland Indians minor league system in 1998. He later became the first base coach of the White Sox’s AAA affiliate, before joining its Major League team in 2000.
