How did you end up in Delaware?
“My two older brothers were born in Alexandria, Virginia, but when my dad got a business started up in Delaware, they moved to Delaware. There I was born, and there I lived until I left for college.”
How many times have you been asked the above question?
“I’ve been bombarded with that question everywhere I go, along with, ‘What’s in Delaware?’ To which I promptly reply: ‘Nothing … except for tax-free shopping.’ For some reason, a lot of people seem very excited to meet me, at least from what it seems when they exclaim, ‘You’re the first person I’ve met from Delaware!’ [To which] I’ll usually say, ‘You’re not the only one I’ve been the first for.’ Then I’ll think about how weird my response was, and then there’ll be an awkward silence between me and the person standing across from me in deflated excitement.”
Where do you get your Korean food and groceries?
“There are two Korean groceries and two Korean restaurants that are on the same highway. All in all, they both serve their purposes. The restaurant food is edible, but since there isn’t competition, they don’t have to put in much effort. My family will sometimes drive out of state to get to bigger Korean supermarkets. But it’s a little embarrassing because we always look like we’re stocking up for a long, harsh winter because we’ll show up at the register with two to three carts of food.”

Describe your Koreatown:
“Ha! Koreatown? Let’s go to the next question. It doesn’t exist.”
Where’s the hang-out hot spot?
“There really isn’t much to do in Delaware, except eat, go to the movies, eat out, go bowling, order in, or go to someone’s house and eat there. There used to be a PC bang one summer that was a ‘hot spot,’ but that later went out of business because it was really expensive and most Delawareans seem pretty cheap. But seriously, it was four dollars an hour. Unacceptable. A lot of people go to the beach during the summer, but I think Delaware beaches are kind of gross. The outlets by the beach are a huge tourist attraction because on top of the cheaper prices, Delaware has no sales tax on clothes. I bet that you can’t say that about your state. Unless you’re from Oregon or Alaska. Or Montana. Or New Hampshire. Shut up, I want Delaware to be special.”
What do you like about the city?
“You can’t really call Newark a city. Newark is a simple college town, powered by rich students at the University of Delaware. There isn’t much to it, and it’s really boring, actually. But it’s quaint and simple.”
