LOS ANGELES — Two feature documentaries that explore vastly different sides of South Korea are just a few of the highlights at the Visual Communications Asian Pacific Film Festival (VC FilmFest), when it convenes for the 21st time from April 28 to May 5.

“Good For Her” (scheduled to screen on April 29 at 10 p.m.) is director Elizabeth Lee’s documentary on the cosmetic surgery boom in Seoul. Through personal narration, nostalgic images of Korean beauty standards, contemporary news clips and interviews with Korean youngsters and university professors, this video explores the pressures on Korean youth to undergo cosmetic surgery. Their voices give an in-depth and personal look into the universal theme of beauty within the framework of a highly competitive, trend-sensitive, patriarchal Korean society.

For “It Goes On — The Documented Is Documented” (scheduled for April 30 at 3:15 p.m.), director Joo Hyun Sook asks the question: “Why do migrant workers leave their countries behind?” Beginning with a trip to Bangladesh, the film exposes the economic and social realities that force workers to seek greener pastures in another country, including the problems that arise for those undocumented residents who come to Korea.

Also of note at this year’s FilmFest is “Three…Extremes” (scheduled for April 30 at 11:45 p.m.), a triptych of horror stories from three of East Asia’s most compelling directors: Japanese cult figure Takashi Miike, Hong Kong’s Fruit Chan, and South Korea’s Park Chan Wook.
