Nineties K-pop sensation Yoo Seung Jun may be kung-fu-chopping his way back into the spotlight, thanks to the help of a pal named Jackie Chan. According to The Korea Times, the 32-year-old hallyu rider has signed a seven-year contract with Chan’s Hong Kong-based entertainment company, JC Group International, which plans to groom him into a butt-kickin,’ border-crossing action star.
Yoo, who grew up in Southern California, rose to quick fame in Korea with his catchy songs and high-energy moves. But in 2002, just before he would be drafted into the Korean military, he went off to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. In dramatic form, Yoo was ousted from the country.
Chan, 54, blasted into the American spotlight with his death-defying stunts and comedic one-liners in films such as Rumble in the Bronx, Shanghai Noon and the Rush Hour series. It is reported that Yoo is the first actor to be taken under his wing.
Perhaps we’ll be seeing Yoo battling the bad guys in the next Jackie-esque, made-for-mainstream fighter flick. Let’s just hope they ditch the exaggerated accent and bad Asian jokes.
