One of the most talked-about fashion statements on the red carpet this year was the gown Sandra Oh wore to Los Angeles' 14th annual SAG Awards in January. It was a modern take on the Korean hanbok, designed by Kim Mehee.
Mehee met the "Grey's Anatomy" star three years ago when she came into her Los Angeles shop looking for a hanbok for her niece. When Oh found out she was going to be featured in a fashion spread in Canada's NUVO magazine, she called Mehee for wardrobe help. In the magazine, which hit newsstands Feb. 25, Oh wears four of the five hanboks that Mehee designed for her. Mehee was thrilled when she found out Oh would wear the fifth hanbok to the SAG Awards.
"The hanbok is not well-known like the Japanese kimono, the Chinese cheongsam or the Indian sari," says Mehee, 46, who has designed hanboks for celebrities throughout Korea. "It has been my dream to let it out into the mainstream. It's a statement of culture and identity."
The hanbok that Oh wore to the SAG Awards is made of silk and satin, and has a long ribbon dangling from the oversized bow. Mehee turned the skirt into a dress, resulting in a unique strapless stunner. A similar style would retail for about $1,500, Mehee says.
