Hines Ward might be a wide receiver but he’s an even wider giver.
The four-time Pro Bowl player was named the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year, a title honoring both his charity work and excellence on the field.
Over the past two years, Ward has become a figure for social change, creating the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation, which aims to address discrimination for mixed-race children in South Korea. Last month, he hosted eight kids from South Korea in Pittsburgh, inviting them to a team practice, showing them around at museums and joining them for dinner.
“This is the greatest Christmas present I could ever receive,” he told press when the group arrived at the airport.
As the team’s winner, Ward is now in the running for the league-wide title of Walter Payton Man of the Year, named after the Chicago Bears’ running back who died in 1999. The national award, which comes with a $25,000 donation in the player’s name, will be announced during Super Bowl week in Glendale, Ariz.
