Battling blustery island winds, K.J. Choi managed to secure a three-shot win at the Sony Open in Honolulu, the PGA Tour’s first full-field event of the season.
During the final round, Choi held off the surging Rory Sabbatini of South Africa, finishing at 14-under-par after shooting a 1-over-71. The win makes Choi the first Sony Open champion in 41 years with a final round over par. He has won at least one tournament every year since 2005, becoming one of only four golfers to do so. He receives $954,000 for his seventh career PGA Tour victory.
Choi, who currently ranks ninth in the world, says he will donate about a third of his prize money to the families of victims of a warehouse blaze in Korea, which killed 40 people last month.
“I hope that the deceased rest in peace and that their families overcome this suffering,” Choi said in a statement.
