In the sphere of commemorative holidays, there’s a day for Columbus, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez and now … Yul Kwon?

It’s true. The city of Concord, Calif., where the six-pack-sporting “Survivor” champion grew up, has designated Aug. 16 as Yul Kwon Day. In front of a crowd of about 700, city officials presented him with the proclamation. Concord Mayor Mark Peterson touted the reality star as his “hero.”

Kwon, 32, used the opportunity to promote the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, announcing to his fans that he just donated $25,000 to the charity. He says he felt honored to receive the recognition, as his parents have lived in the Bay Area suburb for more than 25 years.

“It’s every kid’s dream to have their own day,” says Kwon, who has recently worked as a CNN special correspondent. “But I don’t see this as any type of individual recognition. Everything we achieve as individuals is a statement of the community.”

While we won’t be getting a day off from work for this one (shucks!), we hope to celebrate Yul Kwon Day for years to come.
