The children have been watching the apples on our apple trees grow over the past few months. Practically every day they’d ask, “When can we eat them?” Finally, one late afternoon, an apple dropped off the branches and landed into the soil where one child exclaimed, “It fell! The apple fell!”  It was a tiny apple measuring only about two inches long, but teacher Michelle cut it up into tiny pieces and gave it to the children to eat. It was a little tart and a little sweet. They said it was “delicious!”

Some of the bean plants that were planted in the spring have finally resulted in fully grown bean pods. There were a variety of beans, including black beans, white beans and green beans. The children picked the pods, opened them and proceeded to peel off the skins. We also had some snap sugar peas that were gladly shared and eaten by the children and teachers.

If you are interested in enrolling your child in KYCC Children’s Center program, please contact Cindy Shin at (323) 297-0038, ext. 302.

Introducing The Youth Council

The Treehouse after-school center at KYCC proudly announces the development of its first-ever youth council. This new program is composed of eight high school students who have been carefully selected to create community service projects for their neighborhood. Through weekly leadership meetings, each council member learns more about the various issues facing Koreatown and how to effectively create positive changes. The youth council will be working together to create a college fair aimed at providing important resources for youth in the community and to prepare them for their future education. In an attempt to bridge the academic gap in the Los Angeles high school system, our youth council is determined to provide equal access to college information.

The youth council is also responsible for the growth and development of the Treehouse. Our students are currently developing a new poetry night program, HALO tournaments and bake sales that will soon appear at the center. These are just a few examples of the wonderful new additions our council is creating at the Treehouse.

Our youth council program runs for six months and we will be electing new candidates in December. All interested applicants are encouraged to apply in November.

The Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Inc. (KYCC) is a nonprofit organization established in 1975. KYCC’s mission is to serve the evolving needs of the Korean American population in the greater Los Angeles area, as well as the multi-ethnic Koreatown community. KYCC’s programs and services are directed toward recently immigrated, economically disadvantaged youth and their families, and promote community socioeconomic empowerment.
