On Sept. 20, KHEIR will celebrate its 21st anniversary with its annual “Increasing Access to Health Care” fundraising dinner at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This year, KHEIR is working to ensure that the women and children in our community are receiving essential health care services. We are celebrating the launch of our Healthy Child Program supported by Kaiser Permanente, which offers pediatric care for underprivileged children. We are also garnering support for our imaging department, which will provide life-saving breast cancer screenings for underserved women beginning in spring of 2008.

Each year, KHEIR honors leaders in the community that have made a difference. The 2007 honorees include:

Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente is America’s leading integrated health plan. Through their vision and leadership, KHEIR’s pediatric unit became a reality, addressing the critical health needs of our children.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Herb Wesson, Jr.

Councilmember Wesson has made economic development his priority and his chairmanship of the Housing, Community and Economic Development Committee provides him with an opportunity to shape the economic development for Los Angeles. He was selected for his contributions to improving the quality of life in KHEIR’s service area of Los Angeles Metro, with a special focus on Wilshire Center/Koreatown.

State Controller John Chiang

State Controller Chiang sponsored innovative tax seminars that provided access to information and services to the public and boosted small businesses by sponsoring events that provide entrepreneurs with the tools to grow their businesses and prosper. He is being honored for his leadership contributions, impacting the lives of not only the Asian Americans, but the residents of the entire state of California and beyond.

The dinner will also feature a silent auction event with many unique items up for bid. And back by popular demand, the silent auction will be highlighted by original artworks by 20th-century masters including Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Renoir, Dali and more. Each piece is personally selected by a renowned Beverly Hills gallery. The art pieces will be auctioned at minimum bids of at least 50 percent of the gallery value. Proceeds from the silent auction and dinner offset the costs of the community clinic’s subsidized health care for uninsured and underinsured patients.

The Korean Health Education, Information and Research (KHEIR) Center was established in November 1986 as a nonprofit community-based organization in response to a United Way inquiry. The objective of the KHEIR Center is to serve and provide health, human and social services to the low-income, monolingual/limited English-speaking Korean and Latino communities of Koreatown and outlying areas in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
