The night overflowed with soju cocktails, music and celebrity hobnobbing, all to toast the 17th anniversary of KoreAm Journal and the fourth year of Audrey magazine. On April 19, the Mercury condominium complex, which was also celebrating its own grand opening, hosted “Exquisite” in honor of the two magazines with a party on the high-rise’s rooftop.

“Cost has prevented us from doing this in the past,” said James Ryu, editor in chief of KoreAm and publisher of Audrey, “but when the Mercury offered to sponsor our party, it was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down.”

The more than 600 guests balanced plates filled with Ozekii Sushi and cups of Jinro soju while rubbing shoulders with the likes of actors Rick Yune, Tamlyn Tomita and Moon Bloodgood and watching various musical acts onstage.

The talents of performers like Lola Fair and Baby J and Jamie Jones (formerly of the Grammy-award winning pop group All-4-One) impressed partygoer Daniel Bang so much that he claimed, “The best part of the night was listening to all the groups sing.”

As DJ Shy spinned vinyl in the corner, some braved it out on the dance floor while others schmoozed near the pool area that had been transformed into a glittering lounge.

“We only had two weeks, and we were able to throw a great event,” said Ryu. “I’d like to do parties like this more often, bringing together the people we write about with our readers.”

Brook Lee, Miss Universe 1997 and KoreAm covergirl, was one of those people, showing up despite being eight months pregnant.

“I had a great time being there to support Audrey and KoreAm,” said Lee. “I was on the cover when [KoreAm] was the size of album records. It’s so much more sophisticated now. It’s been amazing to see the progression.”
