The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has awarded KCCD with the Communities Empowering Youth Program grant.

“We are excited to have this opportunity to empower organizations to better serve Asian youth who are often underserved or ignored,” says Hyepin Im, KCCD president and CEO.

KCCD, in collaboration with United Way, will be providing training and technical assistance for youth agencies in the areas of community engagement, leadership development, program development and organization development in order to strengthen their work in youth development, gang activity and youth violence. KCCD will also be identifying, developing and disseminating program tools and curricula specifically designed to be effective with Asian American youth.

“United Way of Greater Los Angeles is excited to participate in Communities Empowering Youth (CEY) with KCCD,” says Jennifer Arceneaux, community investment officer at United Way. “CEY offers us the opportunity to deeply engage Asian and Pacific Islander communities and further expand the implementation of best practices for youth development organizations.”

Agencies that will be working with KCCD include the Asian Youth Center, Kollaboration, Nanoom Fellowship, Pilipino Worker’s Center, All People’s Christian Center, Korean American Family Service Center, Our Saviour Center and P.F. Bresee Foundation.

Strengthening Relationships

Parents gain tools and insight at KCCD’s special seminars

KCCD successfully hosted its 2007 parent education seminar series on Asian youth. We would like to thank our co-sponsors LAPD, Asian Pacific Probation Association, Asian Gang Unit, LA County District Attorney’s Office, Korea Times, Korea Daily and Wilshire United Methodist Church for making this educational event successful.

KCCD’s parent education seminars were geared toward helping parents understand and strengthen their relationships with their children.

Participating parents expressed enthusiasm and appreciation for the seminars. Here are some of their comments:

“I came here expecting to enhance my ability to better communicate with my children. I feel I have learned so much and am glad that I came.”

“This was very helpful because it dealt with many real issues. I would definitely like to attend more seminars in the future.”

“I really didn’t know about the many kinds of substances and drugs out there. This seminar has been an extremely eye-opening experience for me. Thank you.”

“I have a son who is 18 years old. Since last year, I noticed his behavior and increasing stubbornness. There are times I don’t know how to approach him. But through this seminar, I learned how I can try to communicate with him better.”

“The seminar on drug abuse was a great chance for us parents to learn about the many different drug issues. Please have more workshops more often!”

“The lessons I learned today are relevant not only for communication between parents and their children, but also between any two people.”
