The Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Inc. (KYCC) is a nonprofit organization established in 1975. KYCC’s mission is to serve the evolving needs of the Korean American population in the greater Los Angeles area, as well as the multi-ethnic Koreatown community. KYCC’s programs and services are directed toward recently immigrated, economically disadvantaged youth and their families, and promote community socioeconomic empowerment.
KYCC would like to sincerely thank all of those corporations, businesses, community organizations and individuals who contributed to making our 6th Annual Benefit Concert, “Believe in the Power of Music,” a huge success. From the packed house at Walt Disney Concert Hall to the extraordinary performances by the soloists and members of the Los Angeles Festival Orchestra and Youth Symphony, the event was one to remember. Emcees Moon Il Lim of the Korea Business Herald and Jinah Kim, a reporter at NBC, opened the evening and introduced our sponsors, conductor and musicians. Also joining them on stage were three KYCC youth participants who had worked with a filmmaker to create an eight-minute documentary film on life in Koreatown. The compelling story told of the issues facing teens, such as getting into college, getting out of gangs and assimilating into a new country. After the film, the orchestra played a wonderful program that ended with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
New Classes At The Treehouse
Come down and see what’s new at The Treehouse. Our new after-school center is hosting a variety of workshops and trainings for high school youth to participate in.
Every Wednesday at 5 p.m., one of our instructors will be teaching youth how to create their own musical beats on the computer. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in the music industry and developing personalized tracks. This is a free workshop and is open to all who sign up at our center.
The Treehouse is also proud to announce our collaboration with actor James Hong and his daughter April Hong. The Hong Acting Workshop will teach youth how to build their self-confidence, improve speech, and learn acting skills for films, TV and commercials. Classes will be held at the Treehouse on Saturday afternoons. Our special introductory price at $20 per lesson will be available till the end of August. To enroll, please call (323) 938-1490 or visit www.jameshong.com.
We will also provide English speaking lessons every Monday at 5 pm. This class will help youth build their English vocabulary, practice grammar and develop conversational skills.

News From KYCC’s Youth Development Unit
KYCC’s after-school program staff at Los Angeles High School proudly celebrated program participants’ high school graduation. For students and staff, graduation is the culmination of years of hard work, persistence and the overcoming of obstacles. William Vasquez, a longtime participant remarked, “The program helped me out a lot with my exit exam, my classes, letting me stay late to work on papers and giving me a place to stay after school so I can stay away from trouble. Graduation was the best moment in my life.”
