KYCC’s Youth Development (YD) Unit is currently preparing for another exciting year of leadership development, community advocacy and large-scale special events. Student leadership groups YDAPP (Youth Drug Abuse Prevention Program) and KCSC (Korean Coalition of Students in California) are currently in the process of preparing for the start of their programs, which will begin in early September and run through June. Some student groups will organize in the coming months the Halloween Haunted House, KYCC Holiday Carnival, a basketball tournament and a youth dance.

In mid-September, the YD unit will kick-off another year of TEAM (Tutor Education and Mentor). TEAM pairs high school interns in a mentoring relationship with students in KYCC’s academic after-school programs.

KYCC is also thrilled to report its ongoing success at the Drop In Center at Los Angeles High School. The Drop In Center serves as a portal for support services offered to students of L.A. High and includes tutoring, college preparation, CAHSEE test preparation, leadership development and community service projects. The Drop In Center, open at L.A. High’s Harrison Hall every day from 3:08 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., served over 600 students this past year. A Northern California college tour was one of the major highlights of the program this past year. Eight L.A. High School students participated in a multi-college campus tour. Colleges on the tour included Stanford and UC Berkeley. All services offered at L.A. High’s Drop In Center are free of charge. For more information, contact Benjie Kim at (213) 365-7400, ext. 118.

A Concert With Benefits

Anniversary benefit concert a memorable night

Over 2,000 performers, guests and public officials came out to the Walt Disney Concert Hall on July 7 to celebrate KYCC’s 30th birthday. The third annual benefit concert hosted by the agency, “KYCC’s 30th Anniversary Benefit Concert” was a sold-out performance.

The concert was led by Conductor Jong Hoon Bae and featured the Korean American Symphony and Master Chorale.

Partners In Clean

KYCC and Prudential Financial partner for a community cleanup

In an effort to beautify the Koreatown community and improve the quality of life for local residents and business owners, KYCC and Prudential Financial recently joined forces to clean Seoul International Park and the surrounding community.

On July 9, KYCC staff and volunteers from Prudential Financial gathered in the parking lot of Seoul International Park, divided themselves into groups and concentrated on trash pick-up, graffiti removal and general landscaping in and around the park.

More than 100 volunteers filled over 80 trash bags, and graffiti was removed from areas inside the park and all along Olympic Boulevard.

For more information about corporate partnering with KYCC for community cleanups, please call Dore Burry at (213) 743-8750.
