Introducing Dr. Roy Kim
New medical director at community clinic
The KHEIR Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Roy Kim joined KHEIR’s community clinic as its new medical director on April 1. Kim was recruited from Emory University’s School of Medicine where he was an assistant professor of family medicine. He received his medical degree from Loma Linda University and his master’s in public health from Emory University.
With a strong interest in public health, Kim has been volunteering for medical missions since 1997, assisting in medically underserved areas in Africa, South and Central America, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. When asked why he left his prestigious position at Emory University, Kim stated, “I am committed to making a difference to immigrant populations in Los Angeles County by forging collaborations across the private and public sectors and between health researchers and health providers.”
Kim is interested in increasing partnerships between KHEIR and the entire range of health and health-related service providers so that KHEIR will be able to offer more comprehensive health services. Aware of the importance that culture and health beliefs play in healing, Kim is a certified medical acupuncturist and is an advocate of carefully monitored and managed complementary alternative medicine (the selective use of both western and alternative medical treatments for specific health conditions).

Kim joins Dr. Angela Jo on the medical team that serves the patients at KHEIR’s community clinic. Jo has been working part-time at KHEIR since 2001. She is on faculty at UCLA’s School of Medicine as a clinical instructor and researcher in the department of family and community medicine. Her research interest is in cancer prevention and control among low-income, under-served communities. She is currently working on several projects at UCLA, including two collaborative projects with KHEIR that address cancer screening among the Korean American sub-populations.
We are excited to see the changes and growth that will accompany Kim at KHEIR and encourage the community to help KHEIR in welcoming our newest member. For more information, or to schedule an appointment at our community clinic, please call (213) 637-1070.
