George Sarah brings his friends — including Bauhaus’ David J and the Pixies’ Joey Santiago — to downtown Los Angeles for a free concert at California Plaza.

JULY 22-24 LOS ANGELES
The American Cinematheque is presenting a tribute to legendary Korean filmmaker Shin Sang Ok. One of the founding fathers of modern South Korean cinema, director and producer Shin (born 1926) has been hailed for his lyrical, penetrating dramas such as “The Eunuch” (1968), “My Mother and Her Guest” (1961), “Dream” (1967) and “Women of the Chosun Dynasty” (1969). In one of the strangest episodes in film history, Shin and his wife, actress Choe Un Hui, were kidnapped by North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il in the early ’80s and held hostage in the North for five years, where they were forced to make movies until their eventual escape and return to the South. This is the first L.A. retrospective ever mounted of the work of this important and pioneering Korean filmmaker.

At the Egyptian Theatre, located at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. For screening times and other information, visit the Web site www.americancinematheque.com.

Soo Kim’s “The Lights Dim” (2005) is part of the exhibition “Scene ’05” at the Korean American Museum.

Performance begins at 8 p.m. California Plaza is located at 300-350 S. Grand Ave. For more information, visit www.grandperformances.org.
