Steve Kim (left), shown here when he was part of the hip-hop duo Uptown 3000 with Carlos Galvan, was arrested Dec. 14 for the murder of Man Nguyen.
NAME: Steve Sangwook Kim
AGE: 25
HEIGHT: 5’9”
WEIGHT: 175
BACKGROUND: Kim was part of the South Korean hip-hop group Uptown. He reteamed with another former Uptown member, Carlos Galvan, to form Uptown 3000 here in the United States.
ALLEGED CRIME: Murder, First Degree.
At about 9:45 a.m. on Dec. 11, a 31-year-old man was found dead in the backyard of his Burbank, Calif., home. Man Nguyen had been shot once in the head with a shotgun, police said.
Witnesses say they saw a 1997 Honda Passport sport utility vehicle — the type of car Kim usually drives — speeding out of Nguyen’s driveway. A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, reportedly says there has been “a lot of traffic in and out of the house” over the past 12 years. He says the shooting is likely gang- or drug-related.
Burbank police Lt. David Gabriel told reporters that Kim and Nguyen had been “associates of some type.”
In 2001, Kim was arrested in South Korea for allegedly taking drugs, such as Ecstasy, and later deported to the United States, according to the Korean media.
DATE OF ARREST: Dec. 14.
Kim’s parents, Richard Kyung Kim, 66, and Lois Bong Kim, 57, were arrested the night of the shooting, Dec. 11, on suspicion of being accessories to murder by refusing to tell Burbank police the whereabouts of their son. They were held for questioning and released — Lois on Dec. 14 and Richard on Dec. 15.
BAIL: Not posted. Currently being held at North County Correctional Facility in Saugus, Calif., on $2 million bail.
NEXT COURT DATE: Feb. 17 at Pasadena Superior Court.
