A Leo Tolstoy exhibit in Seoul commemorates the long history of Korean-Russian ties.

The relationship between Russians and Koreans dates back nearly two centuries. An exhibit in the Seoul Museum of History featuring the works of author Leo Tolstoy commemorates the 120th anniversary of these diplomatic ties and the 140th year of Korean immigration to Russia.

Among the works displayed in the exhibit are manuscripts of War and Peace, Anna Karenina and Resurrection. This is the first time the documents have been displayed in Korea. About 600 documents, photographs, art works and objects relating to the Russian literary giant are also on display, on loan from the Leo Tolstoy State Museum in Moscow.

The exhibit is divided into five sections. “Tolstoy the Person,” for example, looks at the man who attempted to give up the privileges of an aristocratic landowner to live as an ascetic. “Tolstoy the Author” shows documents and objects related to his literary life and includes drafts of his most famous works. “Tolstoy and His Friends” reveals the relationships he shared with a variety of people who visited him when he lived in his Yasnaya Polyana estate. The exhibit includes a record player that Thomas Edison gave to the author as a present. It also includes photographs and objects related to his role as an education reformer and historian.

The exhibit is on display until March 27.
