The staff of KoreAm and Audrey — Jiae Park, Corina Knoll, Grace Jang, Jiyoon Kim, Eric Sueyoshi, Jimmy Lee, Anna Park, In Soo Song, Anne Kim, Rosie Park and James Ryu (from left to right) — hope you all enjoy the holiday season!

Exploring Christianity and the church among second-generation Korean Americans was something that I have wanted to do for a long time, so I am pleased to present this month’s issue to our readers. The subject of English-speaking ministries and their future is extremely relevant to my life, as I’m sure it is to many of yours.

Korean churches actually served as a community base for the first generation of immigrants: a place where people spoke their language and understood their culture in a time when American life was new and daunting. But as you’ll read in our cover story, factors like the “Silent Exodus” and the emergence of multiethnic churches have affected second-generation churchgoers. It’s clear that as the years go by, the needs of those affiliated with this institution will continue to change.

Hopefully what won’t change is our sense of community, as it is the driving force behind KoreAm’s existence. Every December, when I look back at the year we have nearly completed, I realize how blessed I am that there are readers who always want to hear more about their fellow Korean Americans. This means that KoreAm has a purpose and a mission, and nothing could make me happier — unless of course it’s the work of our dedicated and tireless staff.

Together we’d like to wish you a happy holiday season and thank you for giving us the best gift of all: your support.

James Ryu
