OK. I’ll admit it. I feel stupid. I jumped to conclusions.

I thought HBO was going to be the next in line to hurl comic fodder at the expense of some Koreans’ penchant for canine cuisine when I saw Lisa Kudrow drop this bomb on a promo for the series “The Comeback”: “You see a box of puppies, I see Korean barbecue.” So I tuned in on June 26 ready to watch the insults fly.

But then, while watching the show for the first time, I realized something else entirely was going on. In “The Comeback,” Kudrow plays Valerie Cherish, a former TV “It Girl” attempting to resurrect her acting career. And the Korean barbecue bit is from the show-within-the-show, “Room and Board,” where Kudrow’s Valerie plays Aunt Sassy. But instead of going ahead with the script, Valerie wants the “Room and Board” writers to change that line because she knows the joke is hitting below the belt.

As HBO spokesperson Angela Tarantino explained: “[‘Room and Board’] is sort of a tasteless, bad sitcom. So in thinking in what sort of joke would be tasteless, [the writers of ‘The Comeback’] all deemed this one to be very tasteless.”

That allows Valerie to be “fighting for what is right,” said Tarantino. “Throughout [‘The Comeback’] you see [Valerie will] do anything, but that’s [a joke] she wouldn’t do.”

So here’s to the writers of “The Comeback” for demonstrating that it is possible for Hollywood to exhibit some cultural sensitivity with humor and wit.
