I don’t know why this one memory keeps coming back to me, but try as I might, I can’t help but recall this simple moment when I tossed a football with [Editor in Chief] James Ryu in the KoreAm parking lot. We had just finished mailing out one of the more brutal issues. Brutal because everything that could have gone wrong had gone wrong, and on top of it all, I had been diagnosed with a near-fatal case of writer’s block. There were moments when I wasn’t sure if that month’s issue would ever get published, but somehow, someway, the issue was completed, printed and mailed. It was around that time that James and I tossed a football around for about half an hour until the sun set. I remember fully all the details: the sun falling behind James, the arch of the football sailing through the air, the feeling of the football landing softly in my hands and sometimes hard against my chest. I remember feeling a huge sense of relief, but most of all, I remember feeling an overwhelming sense of humility. It was by far the most peaceful moment I felt while working at KoreAm.
