We’re Open!

On May 23, KYCC opened its new children’s center located at 1140 Crenshaw Blvd. The school operates between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and features two pre-kindergarten rooms, one toddler room and one infant room. The ratios of teachers to children are 1:8, 1:4 and 1:3, respectively.

The school uses developmentally appropriate practices to implement emergent curriculum. Emergent curriculum builds on the ideas and interests of the students and encourages the children to use their creative abilities to problem solve, develop and refine social skills, learn about their environment in family, school and community, and to enhance cognitive and imaginative skills.

Teachers nurture each child’s unique qualities and encourage each child to utilize those qualities within the group setting. This helps the children develop their full potential.

For Crenshaw site enrollment, please contact Children’s Center Family Advocate Cindy Shin at (323) 297-0038, ext. 302, for more information.

Turn On Your Computers

In March, KYCC opened its newly expanded, multilingual computer lab. This has allowed KYCC to continue to provide free basic and intermediate computer courses for parents and guardians of students participating in our elementary and middle school programs. It is also available to teens and unemployed or underemployed persons lacking technology skills. Additionally, additional open lab hours provide students the opportunity to explore topics of their own interest and explore further topics discussed in class.

Students in New York rally for Kamal and Marie, promising students and future leaders who urgently need the DREAM Act to pass.

For additional information on all community technology programs at KYCC, contact Dorian Caal at (213) 365-7400, ext. 214, or dcaal@kyccla.org.

Looking For Leaders

KYCC’s Youth Development Unit is proud to announce the start of a new summer program called the Multiethnic Youth Leadership Project. MYLP is an advocacy group that will address racism and leadership development in the form of training workshops, guest speakers and a youth empowered community service project. The 10-week program will run from mid-July to early September and will also feature a three-day leadership retreat for the program participants. MYLP is currently designed for high school students and will be comprised of 10 students of varying ethnicities.

Contact Youth Development Coordinator Benjie Kim for any additional information at benjiekim4@kyccla.org.
